"Yes", Melkira said, "I am having troubles with this. Gryphons
try to steal the eggs night and day, and I cannot get a breath of
sleep for fear they will carry them off." Aria looked confused, and
Illyria shrank back behind her.
"How can we help? I am certain that we, just two elves, can be
of little aid." Melkira smiled slightly.
"Ah, there's where you are wrong." She slipped into a
storytelling tone, and began to recite:
"Since the Gryphons, Griffins, and Gryphins leave me no time
when they do not try to steal my eggs, I can rarely hunt, and
certainly not go far enough away to get something to drive the
gryphons off. But, in the forests of the Brightelves, lives a small
plant that Gryphons cannot stand the scent of. I need you to get
that for me, or both I and my Dragonets will die. That would be
disaster, for I am the only living female dragon. If you could
go..."
Aria gasped "Us? Go to the Brightelves' Forest? That would be
tantamount to suicide!"
"Not if I aid you with what small magic I possess. I will send
you with a spell to hide you if you do nothing careless. Shall I
hide the frightened one, as well?"
Aria laughed at this description of her sister, but nodded. "It will
keep her out of trouble to go with me."
The dragon waved a claw at them, and it trailed little shimmers
as it went through the air, which, like dust, settled on the two.
"Now go, please!" said Melkira.
