Clan Grishna River

The Clan Grishna River is inhabited by merfolk, who call themselves Grishnans. They are a beautiful people, graceful and seemingly very delicate. Don't let this fool you. Merfolk are protective of their own and fiercely territorial. Don't ever swim in the Clan Grishna River without prior permission or clearance, granted by the Undersea Commerce Committee. They also inhabit the Solaria Sea, which the river flows into, but they don't keep nearly as tight a reign over it, as it is only populated to about ten miles out from the coast. The water ways in the Realms of Mistyc are considered the safest way to travel, as any pirates doing an illegitimate trade are bound to be short lived.

The Merfolk Patrol

One of the reasons the Grishnans rule the river so heavily is the mandatory service each must fill out. During his or her life time, each Grishnan must serve two to five years in the Patrol, and any time after that is both volunteer time, and a paid occupation. The penalty for skipping Patrol duty: being banished from all water ways in Mistyc, forced to live on land in a tank, usually as a pet in some one's home. The Patrol watches the River, checking all boats for UCC passes. When they find one who doesn't have clearance, the results are rather barbaric.

Merfolk Treasures

The merfolk of Mistyc guard some of the most beautiful, mysterious caverns known. Though no one has ever seen them, their existence is often talked about and hinted at, especially at trade conferences between the dwellers of the two different elements. The merfolk never seem to be at a loss for trading goods, using pearls, uncut gems, and incredible jewelry. Also, they are able to claim any sunken ships as their own, often surprising merchants who receive some long lost bauble in exchange for bolts of fine cloth.

Merfolk Lore

The lore of the merfolk is a complex, detailed system of gods and goddesses. Their creation myth tells of a liaison between the elf K'enen and Saliria, the first mermaid. Their offspring became the elves we now know, and of course the merfolk. Many different versions of how this came to be can be found, but the name of Saliria is one on which all merfolk will swear, as is K'enen for the elves. There are many legends about the merfolk themselves. They have both fascinated and infuriated land dwellers, being able to live and breath under the water which means death to the elves, dwarves, fairies, and magical beings. One popular legend is about the luck brought by a mermaid. If one happens to catch one bathing, it shall bring incredible good luck. However, if she should catch you watching her, her curse is enough to make the toughest man come screaming to his knees.
