Van is the rather young king of Fanelia, and, thankfully, he is not portrayed as a boy genius or a prodigy. Van is a rather arrogant, extremely inexperienced king, and not a very likeable person in the first few episodes. He is also the pilot of a huge 'Melef called Escaflowne which, I'm sure you can figure out, is a very important part of the show. Fanelia is burned to the ground in the first episode of the show, leaving Van with a thirst for revenge against-- you guessed it, the Zaibach Empire.
